Protect poultry is a priority for Russia
Image for Protect poultry is a priority for Russia Today, the only way to protect domestic birds is sanitize locations where the bird flu was detected (Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Kurganinsk, Chelyabinsk and Altai regions, Republic of Kalmykia; recent cases in Tula, Tambov and Stavropol regions). “Disinfection cannot be done by watering your yard from a sprinkler or a fire-engine, like they show on TV. This is not the right way to do it and it has absolutely no effect”, says Anatoly Smirnov, a full member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Science, “certain instructions are to be followed, and there are disinfectants and equipment to facilitate sanitization. If the poultry keeper cannot afford them, the government should cover the costs.

The same goes for cars and people, who come from locations where bird flu was registered. They showed on TV how the body and the boot are being disinfected from a bomb. But why? If the virus is present, it is on the wheels, which is the only place where the birds’ excrement (main transmitting agents of the virus) could have gotten and remained. So, you should disinfect the wheels first. Sprinkling an overcoat is absolutely pointless, clothes must be disinfected only in special steamformal cameras.”

The carcasses of infected birds must be burned, and not just buried. The virus is preserved in rotting carcasses for up to 60 days, and if stray dogs dig up the buried bird and other birds fly to this location, the virus will spread.

The earlier the vaccine is developed, the better. If bird flu is not fought, the mutation will happen quicker.

When the vaccine appears, it should be applied only in endangered zones, where migrant birds fly. It will cost 150-200 million rubles.
